Ultium Cells LLC is a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution, focused on producing battery cells for electric vehicles. The company is dedicated to using advanced technologies to manufacture high-quality battery cells, playing a vital role in supporting GM's electric vehicle strategy across North America. The primary service of Ultium Cells is the mass production of large-format, pouch-style battery cells utilizing Nickel Cobalt Manganese Aluminum (NCMA) chemistry. This innovative approach significantly reduces cobalt content, enhancing sustainability. The company also manages the supply chain for these battery cells, ensuring a reliable flow to GM facilities. Ultium Cells operates a major facility in Warren, Ohio, with an annual capacity of 41 GWh, and another facility in Spring Hill, Tennessee. The Ultium battery cells are designed to be modular, allowing flexibility for various electric vehicle models. The company is also exploring applications for its battery modules in non-automotive sectors, such as zero-emission heavy-haul locomotives.
