Husk Power Systems is a clean energy company founded in 2008 and based in Fort Collins, Colorado. It focuses on providing renewable energy solutions to off-grid and weak-grid rural areas in East Africa, West Africa, and South Asia. The company designs, builds, owns, and operates mini-grids and micro-grids that deliver electricity as a pay-for-use service. Initially, Husk developed technology that generates electricity from biomass gasification using rice husks, a local agricultural waste. As solar technology advanced, the company shifted to solar-plus-storage mini-grids, often combined with biomass, to meet diverse community energy needs. Husk Power Systems installs and operates mini-power plants that supply clean electricity to households, businesses, and community facilities, supporting local economies and improving living conditions. The company aims to build 5,000 mini-grids and connect at least 1 million customers by 2030, contributing to sustainable development in the regions it serves.
