Open Society Foundations

The Open Society Foundations is a global philanthropic organization founded by George Soros in 1979. It is recognized as the world’s largest private funder of initiatives that promote justice, democratic governance, and human rights. The organization aims to build vibrant and inclusive democracies through grants, advocacy, impact investing, and strategic litigation across six regions: Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa, and the United States. Initially established to support Black students in apartheid South Africa and Eastern European dissidents, the Foundations now focus on countering systemic inequalities and authoritarianism. They provide grants to individuals, NGOs, and grassroots organizations, emphasizing areas such as democratic practice, equity in governance, rights and dignity, and addressing climate change.
