BNSF Railway

BNSF Railway is one of the largest freight railroad networks in North America, primarily operating in the western two-thirds of the United States, as well as parts of Canada and Mexico. Formed in 1995 through the merger of Burlington Northern Inc. and Santa Fe Pacific Corporation, BNSF has a rich history with roots dating back to 1849. It is a principal operating subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, which acquired the company in 2010. The company operates approximately 32,500 route miles of track across 28 U.S. states, three Canadian provinces, and five key Mexican gateways. BNSF specializes in freight rail transportation, moving a wide range of goods, including intermodal shipments, automobiles, grain, lumber, and coal. In 2024, BNSF transported over 5 million intermodal shipments and moved 3.1 million new cars and trucks. The company plays a vital role in agricultural logistics, transporting enough grain annually to supply 740 million people with a year’s supply of bread. BNSF's Network Operations Center enables efficient and reliable management of train operations around the clock.
