PERTS seeks a Data Analyst/R Programmer to help shape the national conversation about equity in students’ experiences.
PERTS (perts.net) helps educational organizations advance educational equity by enabling them to continuously measure the impact of educational practices on students’ experiences—experiences like identity safety, personally and culturally relevant content (see perts.net/elevate/measures-refs). For more about PERTS’ approach to measurement, see our OpEd in EdWeek or our article in the Teachers College Record.
The Data Analyst/R Programmer will support PERTS and other leading national education organizations in analyzing data about the experiences of students they serve. For example, the analyst may create reports outlining how students from historically marginalized racial or economic backgrounds can experience more supportive learning environments.
PERTS is located in San Francisco, and we have a remote working culture that welcomes candidates from across the U.S. The role is a part-time position ranging from 10-15 hours per week — the wide range is to accommodate potential candidates with various other commitments. The pay range is $45-$50/hr (based on experience/education/location), beginning in Summer 2025. The work schedule is flexible.
Because inequitable educational systems disproportionately harm marginalized communities, we believe that these communities must be centered in the work we do. Hence, we strongly encourage applications from members of marginalized communities as a part of cultivating a diverse talent pool.
Our team is committed to contributing to something bigger than ourselves while caring for each other as a team. Our core values are:
- Create a more equitable world.
- Our community is warm and inclusive.
- Focus on improvement, not blame.
- Love the truth.
- Practicality beats purity.
Core Responsibilities
The Data Analyst/R Programmer will help the PERTS team by:
- Cleaning, linking, and aggregating student data from different sources using the dplyr and tidyr packages in R statistical software.
- Analyzing student survey data collected via PERTS programs to help schools create excellent and equitable student experiences.
- Creating meaningful graphics and visualizations of data for educators and other stakeholders using the ggplot2 framework.
- Contributing to the maintenance, use, and design of the PERTS R codebase.
Requirements
The following skills and experience are necessary to be successful in the role:
- Commitment to the mission of promoting equity in America’s educational system.
- Track record of producing clean, modular, efficient code using the tidyverse and ggplot2 frameworks within R statistical software.
- Expertise handling complex data cleaning tasks involving formatting, linking and analyzing irregular data from multiple sources.
- A growth mindset and desire to acquire new technical skills.
Other Useful Skills/Experience
The following skills and experience are not required, but potentially useful for the data analyst/R programmer position:
- Experience with activism and social justice.
- Knowledge of social science research methods.
- Other technical skills such as additional programming languages, github, or SQL.
Application process & timeline
- If you are interested, please apply by April 25, 2025. All applications will be reviewed after this deadline.
- Other stages will include submitting a code sample, interviewing with our team, and submitting references.
Equal Employment Opportunity
PERTS is a fiscally sponsored project of Tides Center. Tides Center is an equal opportunity employer. We strongly encourage applications from people of color, women, and bilingual and bicultural individuals, as well as members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities and welcome your application even if you do not meet every one of the above requirements. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, color, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital status, age, political affiliation, disability, or medical condition. Also pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we encourage and will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.
Reasonable accommodation will be made so that qualified applicants with a disability may participate in the application process. Please advise in writing of special needs at the time of application.

PERTS uses research-based techniques to raise students' motivation and achievement. Our programs have improved grades and reduced the racial achievement gap at multiple schools. They are designed to change how students think about school in ways that enhance their motivation and achievement. Background Studies by Stanford Professors Carol Dweck, Geoffrey Cohen, and Greg Walton show that short psychological interventions can raise students' motivation and reduce group-based achievement gaps. Because of limited resources, however, few schools could benefit from these interventions. Mission We started PERTS to make the latest research-based behavioral interventions accessible to all schools. We continue to test our programs to better understand when, how, and for whom they are most effective.
